How to make a better mnemonic:

  1.  Make the remembered sentence more easily remembered: shorter, more logical, or more funny or more silly. If this sentence is too difficult to remember, you might as well just recite the actual set of words that you want to remember. 
  2. Each word reminds you of a word to remember. Instead of matching just the first letter, match two or more letters, better yet make it rhyme or echo the set of words to be remembered. 
  3. Perhaps add a picture, to visualize the idea.Example: For remembering Methane, Ethane, Propane, and Butane
     Use:

What is Plasma?

You are likely familiar with the 3 states of matter which we encounter during our everyday lives: solids, liquids, and gases. Yet there is a fourth state of matter less often encountered: plasma. Plasma makes up all of the stars, and is the most common form of matter in the visible universe. To understand plasma, let’s first quickly review the properties of the other states of matter.

A solid typically consists of a large number of atoms which are bound together with some definite structure. Now if we add enough energy (heat) to a solid, our experience tells us that it will melt and eventually become a liquid. In this state, the atoms only loosely interact with each other and the liquid is able to flow. Now if we once again add enough energy to the liquid, it will become a gas. In a gas, the atoms are totally free to “wander” around and, as a result, they will fill any container that they are put into. Next is where plasma comes in. If we have a gas that consists of single atoms, and we add sufficient energy (heat) to it, the negatively charged electrons which are typically bound to the positively charged nucleus of these atoms will overcome the pull of the nucleus (opposite charges attract). The result will be a “soup” of particles consisting of the free electrons (- charge) and the free nuclei (+ charge). This state is known as plasma. Fusion reactions require so much energy that they must occur with the hydrogen isotopes in this plasma state.

Since plasmas are made of charged particles every particle can interact with every other particle, even over very long distances. This makes plasmas behave very strangely compared to the other states of matter. When every particle “talks” to every other particle the material can form all sorts of waves and move in many complex ways. This makes studying plasmas very interesting and hard to do. The fact that 99% of the universe is made of plasmas makes studying them very important if we are to understand how the universe works. Lessons learned in plasma experiments on Earth can tell us things about how distant stars work.



Some examples of plasmas are:
- The glowing “gas” (actually plasma!) inside neon signs and fluorescent lights.
- The glowing parts of a plasma TV.
- The exhaust of big rockets.
- Lightning.
- The northern and southern lights.
- The solar wind and space weather.
- The Sun and all the stars.
- The stuff inside a fusion reactor.

Do you view your career as a journey or a destination?
This is a very important questions, I asked myself 3 years ago when I just started working as an educator in Perak Matriculation College. How I view my career is crucial for my career progression. Destination and journey are two different ways to look at career progression. My answer is my career is my DESTINATION, this is where I want to be and what I want to be.

Hence I started to outline my career path, set goals to achieve higher level of proficiency and to achieve a certain recognition in this field. My ultimate goal is to be honored a doctorate title in Education, the highest academic achievement. The journey start with pursing Master in Chemistry Education in Universiti Pendididkan Sultan Indris. It is going to be though journey but I am confident I can do it.

Task for assignment 4:

"Insructions: 
In group you are to prepare an online learning resources that can be access freely by others. The resources should contain: 
  1. content based on the form 4 or form 5 chemistry syllabus. Choose one topic.
  2.  pictures, links and hyperlink to word documents and videos for related concepts.
  3. examples, activities and exercises. 
  4. videos, simulation (fins over the net) or animation."

This is a group assignment. My group member and I build a blog for students to access all the learning resources such as notes, animation, quizzes, exercises and fun activities on Electrochemistry.All the materials in the blog are based on Matriculation syllabus for Electrochemistry since our students is from Matriculation College.

Assigment 3 (Online Forum)




Task for assignment 3 is:

This is an individual assignments. Each group has come up with an current issue on teaching and learning using technologies during the first class. Every week one of the issue will be posted and we have discuss and give our opinion regarding the issue. Discussion of weekly issues in the forum with my coursemates gives us opportunity to share ideas and learn new things.

HOW TO STUDY ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

 

Educational psychologist recognize several stages of learning:
  • Remembering (memorization)
  • Understanding
  • Applying
  • Analyzing
  • Evaluating
  • Creating new ideas
Try to judge where you fall in this hierarchy, and think about how you can progress to the next level. That is, think about how you think! Our goal is to get you to at least the third level in this class.
You need to advance through these stages in organic chemistry so that you can:
  • Learn to think logically about molecular properties and behavior
  • Master the course ideas
  • Be able to explain them to others and use them on examinations
You will need a well-organized approach and the commitment to stick to a fairly rigorous and time-demanding study schedule. Here are some suggestions. 

1. Allocate your time and set study goals in advance. You will require no less than 10 hours of study time each week, beginning in the first week of the semester.
  • You will get much more value for time and energy invested if you plan in advance what you intend to accomplish in each study session
    • Use one of each week's ten hours to plan what you will do with the other nine
  • Because you are trying to acquire useful habits, setting up your study sessions at regular times and in the same, comfortable place is a good idea
  • Choose these times and places to minimize interruption and distraction: this means no television and no loud music, no cell phone (turn it off and place it out of reach), and preferably a place where multiple friends will not drop by multiple times.
    • If you use your iPod, play calm, relaxing music.
  • Focus on work from the moment you sit down; relax during breaks.
Your plan for each new topic should include the following activities:
  • Read the Study Goals for that topic
  • Read and outline the appropriate sections of the text prior to the instructor's discussing them in class
  • Read through your class notes and merge them with the outline of the text, putting ideas into your own words
  • Write summaries of important points, as if you were explaining them to some one else
  • Make and use flash cards
  • Make reaction summaries - both of the reactions of functional groups and of reactions that produce a particular functional group
  • WORK PROBLEMS; really work them. Looking at the problem and then looking at the answer in the Study Guide and saying, "Yeah, OK, I get it!" is passive studying of the worst kind. It not only does no good, it makes you overly optimistic about what you know;
  • List difficulties and questions to clear up with the instructor during his or her office hours;
  • Drill with your summaries, flash cards, and reaction catalogs;
  • Try to develop visual summaries, such a flowcharts and tables, in addition to the ones provided by your instructor; graphics are an aid to remembering content For example, a student working with flash cards might notice that most the the reactions studied in the chapters on alkene and alkyne chemistry can be summarized in a simple chart:

2. Practice daily! Just as in studying a foreign language, multiple daily sessions yield better results than one marathon session each week (or even worse, the night before an exam).
  • An important aid to efficiency is using your larger blocks of time for large jobs, like working problems, and your smaller scraps of time for small jobs, like drilling with flash cards.
3. Study actively, with pencil or pen in hand. Outline textual material rather than highlighting it. Highlighting is too passive.
  • As you work, draw structures for molecules mentioned by name.
  • When you encounter a summary, write it down, preferably in your own words, don't just read it. Even speak the summary items out loud.
  • Other active study methods:
    • transcribing notes and combining notes and chapter outlines
    • working problems
    • making and drilling with flash cards
    Experimental psychologists have demonstrated that material learned by passive methods usually can be recognized as correct when encountered later, but cannot be recalled at will. Deliberate recall is the aim of learning! Furthermore, information is retained most effective when it is used immediately after acquisition!
4. Schedule short breaks at regular intervals during study. Ten minutes out of every hour is a good proportion. Use the break to stretch and walk around, get yourself a cold drink, make a short telephone call, or anything else that takes your mind off chemistry for a few minutes. Consider the break a reward for working hard during the preceeding 50 minutes. 

5. Make sure your study plan includes reviewing for exams, but does not include "all-nighters" or frantic scrambling right up to the minute of the exam. These self-defeating measures only lead to panic.
  • Instead, leave room in your schedule for an enjoyable activity in the few hours before the exam: a walk in the woods, dinner with a good friend (avoiding discussion of the exam), watching a favorite video.
  • Students who are runners tell me that a short run before the exam is very helpful at relieving stress.
  • You want to enter the exam room calm and confident that your organized preparation has you ready for the exam.
These suggestions and the other learning and problem-solving methods taught during the course are based on long-term observations of (and by) many students, and on proven psychological principles. The approach works best if you support it in these ways:
  • Put your study plan into operation immediately! Begin even before the first class meeting. Try to anticipate temptations to break your study schedule, and fight them actively. Skip a study session only if you have managed to complete the scheduled work in advance. If you plan ahead, major social events need not become impediments to good grades. 
  • Make a list of the reasons why you need good grades in the organic course! Fasten it to the inside of your notebook cover. Then, if you feel yourself losing momentum, or are tempted to give up your study plan, look at the list.
  • Use all of the resources available to you. Many students don't. Some of the most important resources are:
    • Your instructor. I am the most underutilized resource available to you. Change that! Use office hours and any other time the instructor makes available. Most individuals in this Department have open door policies, meaning that you are welcome to ask for help at any time. In addition to getting answers to questions, you will learn more about what the instructor considers important. Office visits also give you the opportunity to show that you are taking the work seriously. But arrive prepared! Vague questions like "Could you go over NMR again?" imply that you have not done much for yourself. If you have followed the suggestion above and made a list of specific things you don't understand, and specific problems in the assignment with which you need help, your instructor can make effective use of your time together, and also will be impressed by your study habits.
    • Recitations. The benefit again depends on your preparation. Watching someone else work a problem that you have not tried yourself is a passive experience with limited learning value for you. On the other hand, seeing confirmation of a solution at which you have arrived by your own effort, or seeing an alternative solution, is very valuable. Of course, seeing resolved a problem that you got stuck on also is valuable.
    • Exam postmortems. Detailed study of your returned exam may be painful, especially if the instructor has written critical comments, but it is an excellent learning aid. Don't put the exam away until you know exactly how you made each mistake, and have learned how to avoid repeating it. Use the answer keys that the instructor will post. Work now any problems that you did not attempt during the examination period itself.
  • Adopt a positive attitude about the course. Forget what you may have heard about the difficulty of the course or the personality of the instructor. Remember that many such comments originate with people not prepared or organized to do the work. Using the methods described here gives you a pronounced advantage. The instructor's job is not to entertain you or build your self-esteem. It is to instruct you. Base your judgements of the instructor on how well the material is presented, what learning aids are made available, how accessible he or she is, and so on, rather than on the intangible of "niceness". Developing hostility toward a demanding instructor simply diverts energy from the important task at hand. The greatest enhancement of self-esteem possible comes from tackling a difficult job and doing well at it by hard work and perseverance. 
  • Try to make other aspects of your life as comfortable as possible while tackling this major course. If possible, schedule organic chemistry when the rest of your course load is relatively undemanding. Make time for exercise, which is the best stress reducer of all.

Hi semua, 

Masa berlalu dengan begitu pantas, sekarang telah sampai ke minggu kesepuluh minggu terakhir bagi 'peer teaching'. Kumpulan terakhir akan membentangkan tentang Excel. 

Excel 

Saya yakin anda pasti familiar dengan Excel dan pernah menggunakannya untuk membuat jadual, menguruskan perbelanjaan dan pengiraan mudah. Sebenarnya selain daripada fungsi asas seperti yang dinyatakan tadi, Excel boleh menganalisa, mengelaskan dan menyusun data-data. Kumpulan Sofia mengajar kami bagaimana untuk menggunakan Excel untuk menganalisis keputusan pelajar dan menghasilkan graf pencapaian. Ilmu ini amat berguna kepada kami semua terutamanya dalam melaksanakan program Head Count.

Kelebihan Excel :
  • Guru boleh menggunakannya untuk menganalisa keputusan pelajar. 
  • Memudahkan guru untuk menyediakan graf pencapaian setiap pelajar.
  • Perisian yang terdapat dalam semua komputer yang menggunakan Microsoft Office.
Kelemahan Excel:
  • Perlu teliti dalam menulis rumus kerana jika rumus salah dimasukkan keputusan analisa akan menjadi tidak tepat.

Teaching is a profession that can yield something amazing when the right ideas and beliefs are implemented in the classroom. I believe that the purpose of teaching is not to teach students how to memorize facts, or how to know all the correct answers. The purpose of teaching lies in getting students to truly understand the concepts being examined. The best teachers are patient, understanding, and kind. They can put themselves in their students' shoes and imagine what the students are thinking and feeling, thus anticipating what they need in order to learn and thrive. When a student is struggling, good teachers hide their frustration and refrain from making disdainful comments that only make the situation worse. Instead, compassionate teachers will try anything and everything in order to reach each and every student. It can be challenging at times, but great teachers know that what separates them from the rest of the pack is the heart and soul they bring into the classroom.

Minggu ini kami mempelajari dua lagi perisian iaitu Prezi dan Powerpoint Presentation.


Prezi






Kumpulan 8 memperkenalkan Prezi,  satu perisian persembahan 'cloud-based'  yang mengintegrasikan kelebihan papan putih dan persembahan slides. Terdapat dua versi Prezi iaitu versi 'cloud' ataupun versi di atas talian dan versi komputer. Versi di atas talian adalah perisian percuma manakali perisian Prezi bagi komputer adalahperlu dibeli.  Bagi versi cloud, anda hanya boleh menggunakannya jika terdapat talian Internet kerana semua kerja anda akan disimpan diatas talian

Hanya beberapa langkah diperlukan bagi menggunakan Prezi di atas talian. Layari Prezi dan daftar sebagai pengguna. Kemudian log masuk dan pilih template yang bersesuaian. 


Kemudian gunakan creativiti anda untuk menghasilkan persembahan yang menarik.


Slide persembahan yang telah dibina akan disimpan di dalam akaun anda. Saya tahu tentang Prezi versi komputer namun tidak begitu berminat kerana ianya merupakan perisian berbayar. Tetapi Prezi diatas talian telah mengubah pandangan saya. Perisian ini lebih mesra pengguna berbanding dengan Powerpoint, persembahannya lebih menarik, berwarna-warni serta video boleh di mainkan. Persembahan Prezi seperti satu koleksi buku skrap yang interaktif.  

Kelebihan Prezi:
  • Prezi lebih menarik, mesra pengguna dan persembahannya lebih kreatif.
  • Prezi mudah untuk dikendalikan.
Kelemahan Prezi:
  • Prezi versi diatas talian hanya boleh diakses sekiranya terdapat talian Internet.
 Powerpoint Presentation


Kumpulan seterusnya membentangkan tentang Powerpoint Presentation. Kami diperkenalkan dengan aplikasi  Macros dalam perisian Powerpoint. Macros adalah alplikasi yang membolehkan teka silang kata,  aktiviti "Drag dan drop" dan melabel. Layari laman sesawang ini untuk keterangan lanjut, Tutorial Macros. 

Kelebihan Macros:
  • Guru boleh menghasilkan persembahn powerpoint yang menarik. 
  • Pelajar boleh terlibat secara aktif ketika menonton persembahan powerpoint. 
Kelemahan Macros:
  • Proses memuatkan aplikasi ini ke dalam komputer memakan masa dan agak leceh.
